You think you're seeing a lot more than we're showing you. Of course, nobody predicted Halloween would be a smash success—and as such, Carpenter and Hill never envisioned even a single sequel, let alone a franchise. Michael Myers was an absence of character. And yet all the sequels are trying to explain that. That's silliness—it just misses the whole point of the first movie, to me.

This means that the film's famous cliffhanger ending—in which Michael is seen to have disappeared after being shot six times and plummeting off a balcony—wasn't intended to be a cliffhanger at all, but was simply meant to screw with audiences' heads. Halloween II was put into production as soon as it became clear how huge a success the first film was shaping up to be, but Carpenter and Hill had pitched producers a different idea—one which would have to wait until the sequel underperformed at the box office for them to briefly revisit.

Instead of finding ways to bring Michael Myers back, Carpenter and Hill had the idea to tell a different story with each new Halloween film, making it an ongoing horror anthology series.

Halloween II 's tepid box office convinced producers to give it a shot, and the result—'s Halloween III: Season of the Witch —instantly polarized horror fans everywhere, and continues to do so today. The film focuses on the sinister Silver Shamrock Novelties corporation, manufacturers of the most popular children's masks of the season—which are central to a nefarious plan to wreak untold carnage on Halloween night.

Carpenter and Hill produced, leaving directing duties to none other than Tommy Lee Wallace, who had pulled quadruple duty on the original film. They would get their wish six years lateralthough the sequels and rebooted series that followed would provide mostly diminishing returns, with one exception—'s Halloween H 20 Years Laterwhich ignored previous sequels and served as a direct sequel to Halloween II.

Ironically, it's about to receive the same retcon treatment—the Halloween reboot scheduled for will ignore its predecessors and serve as a direct sequel to the original, with Carpenter serving as executive producer and providing the score —and Jamie Lee Curtis returning to play Laurie Strode one more time. Having accidentally killed an innocent man has really gotten to her, so instead of taking her shot, Laurie winds up with a knife in her back before she plummets off the roof. In this reimagining, Dr. But the re-castings aren't the only serious change. With 's "Halloween," the story focuses more on Michael himself than it does Laurie. In many ways, this picture acts as a prequel and a remake, taking its time to embellish Michael's upbringing and childhood leading up to his eventual killing spree in Haddonfield.

Like previous incarnations, Laurie is once again Michael's younger sister — originally named Angel Myers — and Michael spends much of the film slashing his way through folks to get her to remember that. But she doesn't, and the movie ends with Laurie locked in mortal combat with her long-lost older brother. In the final moments, Michael sends the two of them over the balcony of their old house, and once Laurie wakes, she shoots her brother.

While this one is sort of an odd addition to the "Halloween" saga — especially with the absence of the series' biggest stars — it's not a bad reimagining when you boil it all down. Unlike other classic slasher remakes such as the "Friday the 13th" or the "A Nightmare on Elm Street," Rob Zombie's "Halloween" did well enough to warrant a sequel.

So, inthe second film known as "Halloween II" was released and it mostly picked up a year after the events of the first. Unsurprisingly, Michael survived his near-fatal encounter with his sister and has been drifting for months. But now that Halloween has come again, he returns to Haddonfield with a vengeance. Now living with the sheriff and his family, Laurie works through her trauma, but when Dr.

Loomis' new book about the Haddonfield murders is released, she discovers her true identity as Angel Myers. This revelation shatters Laurie, but what makes it worse is what happens when Michael arrives and kills her friends. After abducting Laurie, Michael and his sister both see the same deranged visions of their dead mother, who calls to them.

Soon after, Loomis is killed by Michael, and Laurie turns on her brother and kills him herself. Taking Michael's mask as her own, "Halloween II" ends with Scout Taylor-Compton's Laurie Strode locked up in a psych ward, still reeling from the visions of her dead mother. It's not the most uplifting ending to this "Halloween" duology, but maybe not the worst one possible, either.

Either way, Michael and Laurie aren't totally down for the count, their final adventures together await. After all that, what more could Laurie Strode go through? Well, 's "Halloween" has a few ideas.

Ignoring the Rob Zombie reboots and every other sequel since the original, the film takes place 40 years after Michael's first attack on Haddonfield. Here, Laurie — with Jamie Lee Curtis returning to the role — and Michael aren't siblings, and both are very much alive. Michael has been locked up for decades, but after a pair of investigative reporters try to interview him, he decides it's been long enough and sets out for a final face-off with the babysitter who got away. Taking on one of the literary masters of horror and suspense, Carpenter directed the big-screen adaptation of Stephen King 's Christine. He took a break from his usual fare for the science fiction romance Starman starring Jeff Bridges.

Bridges played an alien who takes over a dead man's body and becomes involved with the man's widow Karen Allen. The film proved to be a critical and commercial success with Bridges earning an Academy Award nomination for his work. Returning to independent film, Carpenter has continued to work with varying degrees of success, but none matching the heights he reached with Halloween.

Horror thriller Prince of Darkness and sci-fi action flick They Live failed to attract much of an audience.
